Over 2 ~ 3 times higher than existing premium processing

Dongducheon General Industrial Complex (69, Gangbyeon-ro 730beon-gil) has representatives of dyeing and processing companies with unique history. His name is Kim Bum Han. He was a Bangladeshi Canadian before acquiring Korean nationality.

 

Born in Bangladesh, he moved to Canada with her parents at the age of seven and obtained Canadian citizenship.

After graduating from university, he came to Korea and re-entered the Department of Textile Engineering at Konkuk University. After graduating, he joined Daewoo International Textile Business Division as a foreigner in 1992 and worked for Hong Kong. I learned while experiencing the production process. Immediately after he became a full-time employee in recognition of his work ability, he acquired the nationality at the company's recommendation and naturalized.​

 

Kim, who had been on a roll with a promotion to his deputy manager, lost his job after Daewoo Group was put under workout under the IMF. He co-founded J&B Textile Co., Ltd., a textile trading company, in 2001 after working with his senior colleagues. In the beginning, the business was on a roll as it sourced fabric from high-end brands such as lingerie lace against Canadian vendors, with a margin of 30 percent on sales of 5 billion won at one point.

 

However, since five years ago, the exchange  fluctuations in the Chinese market became cheaper than the Korean market, and the dyeing factories, which had been partners, started to disrupt production due to quality problems or shut down.

So, he realized the need for direct production management​

In 2018, the company acquired Yeongdeok Dyetech, the third factory of Yeongdeok Industrial Co., Ltd. (Chairman Kang Hee-gap).

 

Kim said, “It confirmed the possibility of still popular for South Korean products, at same time it is investment if the Kaesong Industrial complex resumes.
However, unfortunately as domestic dyeing factories collapsed one by one caused by reduced order, trading companies like ours have lost the place to handle production. So, I finally acquired Yeongdeok Dyetech with confidence that I would do it myself. ”​

Kim turned the company into a profit-making company after a year from acquisition of Yeongdeok Dyetech, which has been struggling with a deficit for five years in a row. Immediately after the acquisition, the company started to reorganize the system by investing about 9.7 billion won to replace automated facilities and facilities and to rebuild welfare facilities, including dormitories and restaurants for employees. He spent all incomes money on facility investment for a year. 

 

First of all, the company made efforts to establish automation of dyeing processing lines to implement uniform colors and maintain quality.

 

Based on the continuous development of dyeing processing technology through the operation of corporate research institutes and laboratories, the company maintains the best quality through the establishment and management of DB, such as samples and work instructions of buyers.

 

 

In addition, in order to maintain the temperature of water, which is one of the factors that determines the quality of color, the rate of defect at the production site has been drastically reduced from the current 1 to 2 percent by establishing a water-automated sensor system equipped with automatic temperature control, self-generated boiler operation against power failure, and (dye and humidity control system).

 

Because most of its customers supply eco-friendly fabric such as modal, viscose, and single-span to high-end brands such as Japan, the U.S. and Canada, Yeongdeok Dyetech maintains capacity of 500,000 kilograms produce per month by Ecofriendly dyeing system. 

 

After receiving bulk order, If raw silk is imported, it will be weaved the greige from a cooperative factory in Daegu and supplied to Yeongdeok Dyetech after finishing the inspection process at his own inspection station in Pocheon. As a result of such self efforts, the range of fluctuations in sales profits remains to 20 percent and at least around 10 percent.

Kim said, "The reason why we are doing so well is because workers work smiling," adding, "In January this year, we raised the salary of all employees by more than 15 percent. They works five days a week, but paid salary by calculated it as a six-day work a week. As a result, labor costs accounted for 38 percent of the total sales amount.

Instead, employees do their best in their jobs as if they were in return for the motivation of raising salaries, which led to quality maintenance and productivity.​

 

Kim also introduced an autonomous and creative management management system by giving authority and responsibility to the head of the production and management departments in organizational management. He stop by about two to three times a week to receive reports, however the production and managment are carried out smoothly.

 

Still, the shorter workhours, which will take effect next year, is a concern. Kim warned that it would bring about the collapse of the South Korean textile manufacturing industry.

Still foreign buyers are looking for ‘Made in Korea' products. However, he worry about we will give our market to China and developing countries in future. 

He said that Korean government at least need to change the perception of the textile industry to a new high value-added industry rather than a decline industry.

At the end of the interview, Kim said to appreciated, “I was able to come to this place because there was a lot of help from the bosses around the past year.”
